Moreen Carvan

Dr. Moreen Carvan is Marian University’s Director of Institutional Effectiveness. In her career in higher education, she has served on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, the University of Rhode Island, and Marian University of Wisconsin, and in the administration of the Ohio Department of Education and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

As Director, Moreen leads the work of institutional student learning outcome assessment, evaluation of institutional effectiveness, and accreditation. She works, in collaboration with the faculty, staff, and students of Marian University to design and renew the systems that support this work. Evidence of the outcomes of this work drives Marian’s institutional learning and change.

Moreen’s areas of academic emphasis are middle and secondary science education, curriculum and instruction (including assessment), research design and methods, and leadership and change in higher education. Her passion is for working in community to create and sustain equitable higher education that serves a democratic society. To that end, she has presented on research, policy, and practice to the National Research Council, to the membership of multiple state, national and international organizations (e.g., the American Education Research Association, the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education, and the International Council for Education for Teaching, etc.). She currently serves as a Peer Reviewer and Substantive Change Team Chair for the Higher Learning Commission.

Moreen earned her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Cincinnati. She conducted award-winning research while completing her MS in Curriculum and Instruction at Texas A&M University, and learned to love the science and art of educating while completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at El Paso.
